Why does my avent bottle leak
As soon as the cap turns independently of the ring, the assembly is tight enough. Simple, right? I was delighted to find this solution, and it has worked the vast majority of the time for me.
On the rare occasion that a bottle does still leak, completely unscrewing the cap and refastening, repeating the steps above, will do the trick. To further prevent leaks, it is best to avoid mixing formula in the bottle.
It can certainly be done and in fact I do it all the time , but small amounts of formula may splash out. Until you get the hang of it, you may want to test the bottles prior to feeding them to your baby. Hold the filled bottle upside down for a few seconds, and then turn it right side up. A properly sealed bottle will not leak.
Despite the somewhat quirky vent solution, I am still a big fan of Avent classic bottles. I think the simple design really does work, and unlike Dr.
Thank you so much for giving proper instructions on how to use an Avent bottle! I thought my daughter was a gassy baby until I switched to Dr Browns bottles!
Her gasses are coming out on their own without her having to strain, which makes her and I very happy! I guess I misunderstood gassiness for smelly toots! I feel that Dr. Browns bottles were not necessary afterall! Raising my son has definitely been a learning process for me!
I loved the Avent bottles because they were so easy to clean, whereas Dr. Thanks for visiting! I purchased my 1st set back in in store at target and never had any issues with the 2nd and 3rd gen bottle advent made. I now have a 2nd child and I still use this bottle. That should go into the bottle top before screwing on the screw ring with nipple. I called the company when my son was born they leaked everywhere!!
Also the slow flow is more prone to leaking. I actually switched to como room bottles. They are amazing never ever leak. We strive to provide you with a high quality community experience. I make sure the air vent is toward the ceiling when feeding. That keeps leakage minimal for me. So frustrating! We had the same issue when we changed our little guy from 0 to 1 nipples. I think it's because the flow was too fast and he would exhale through the nipple, causing the pressure in the bottle to push the milk out of that seam. Maybe your LO is doing the same?
I watched videos and tutorials online to try to fix the problem, but the only thing that helped us was time. Our little guy uses the 1s and he takes about 10 minutes to eat 6 oz of breastmilk. Same haha I thought it was hilarious that we were putting them wrong for the longest time and now that we're putting them right, they're leaking everywhere. I was thinking of just putting them wrong again haha But i did not know about the vent and the "right" posicion, etc so thanks!
My friend referred me to your site - I was also almost ready to chuck out these stupid leaky bottles we used the Avent system with our first child, four years ago, and I don't remember it leaking this much.
Just tried your method today and is seems to work You're welcome, I'm glad it worked for you. I'll be uploading better pictures to replace the current ones. Ok, I have uploaded a new set of photos with description added in. I hope this will help those who had problems earlier. Thanks a bunch! It was amazing Now I can keep my avent bottles and not get frustrated with them. Now if only my 5 month old will take the bottle. That's a whole other story gotta go back to work next week. You're most welcome.
Wonder why your baby doesn't want the bottle. Bad experience from previous spillage? Make sure it's not leaking between the cap n plastic ring. If it is, you gotta hold the cap together and shake. I'm pretty sure. It's leaking between the bottle and the cap.
Do you have any other idea? Anyways, thank you for your response. I will come to check your comment again. BTW, when I shake, I hold everything together.
I'm sorry to hear it didn't work for you. Are yours the new BPA free bottles? How long have you been using these? Well, I've no idea why it didn't work for you. This method works for me even with the BPA free bottles, plus some of my relatives who are using it. I was about to throw out all of these stupid fing bottles, but I thought I'd give it one last chance on the Internet. You saved me a bit of time and money! You're welcome. Yeah, I know it can be really stressful and annoying when the bottle does that.
It's like roulette, if you're not lucky it leaks most of the time when you aligned the wrong spots unintentionally. We've just checked all our nipples and rings using your suggestion and are hoping for fewer leaks this week! They've been driving us crazy!! I noticed that a few of our nipples actually have 5 vents - I think these may be adjustable flow ones. We can get three but not four of them lined up with the fins.
Any ideas about these? I don't remember seeing that many air vents on the variable flow ones at the shop? Im going to give it a try. Now I just need to figure out which nipple 2 or 3 is best. Thank you.
I have teats with 3 air vents and 6 vents. My initial problems started with the naturally series and I'd decided to stick to water feeding with those teats but today, the 3 vent teats also leaked.
Got fedup so i searched and stumbled on your site. I played around with the 6 vent teats and concluded that out of the 6 vents, 4 has to be behind the 4 fins of the plastic ring and the leak will be fixed. Once again, thank you Crunchy. I have been working on this following your method for 20 minutes and it's just not working, still leaking. Thanks for letting us know. Maybe you can try to do the opposite, for example, aligning two air valves outside the fins.
I know it sounds crazy I have a question regarding this anti-colic bottles. Do the air enter the bottle strictly from the air vents only or do they enter from the teats when the baby 'releases' the grip? I'm concerned because I've seen the illustration on the packaging of the bottles and it shows that air enters from the vents.
However, I noticed air entering the bottle when my baby takes a rest from feeding. I could have over-tightened my bottle right? If I'm not mistaken, most of the air goes through those 'air vents' on the nipple. Can't be sure if any air enters through the nipple 'holes'. Yup, remember not to over-tightened. I think I may have found the solution to the "how tight" question, which for me was crucial to making it leak free.
If you tighten by using the plastic ring, the nipple and ring do not turn at the same rate, and you lose the seal you so carefully created with aligning the fins. If you tighten the cap too hard, it will spin freely on the ring and not tighten the ring any more, much like a torque wrench. Disregard previous post. I did 5 successful trials with no leaking and I thought I had it solved, them when I did it at 3am, leaks! Everything was lined up properly tightened right, and it didn't matter.
Who thought it was a good idea to invent a bottle that requires a NASA engineer to assemble? Thanks for all of your tips, but I've decided these things just aren't worth the effort. I've had about, maybe bottles as sample bottles that my relatives, friends and I bought, old and new ones that never leaked with this method.
Just a dad who figured out a way to deal with it and too cheapskate to throw away the bottles. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I can't even explain how frustrated I have been getting!
How in the world did you ever figure this out? It works and it never crossed my mind to do this in the months that I have been struggling with these leaky bottles. You are a genius. I'm grateful that your curiosity and brilliance paid off for so many other people, including myself! I was another guy ready to consider other manufacturer's systems until I found your post, and gave it a test.
Here is an internet high five for you! Sorry for the late reply, been abit busy lately. I tried your fixes and they are still leaking. Today I took the rings and nipples apart four times, then after losing a half ounce of breastmilk I gave up. I went and bought new bottles today, glass munchkin bottles.
Thanks for your advice though, glad it's working for others! Sorry Crunchy, but it doesn't work for me. I tried this prior to finding your blog so people may not be taking credit from you and have not had much change in whether or not the bottle will leak. Another problem is the newer tinted bottles with the Philips label seem to leak more than the older ones.
Anyone else have this problem? I'm assuming it's because the fins on the bottle itself have been changed. A different alignment is probably required. Any suggestions? I find that this tip does not work for people who then screw the lid on too tight which causes the nipple to move out of alignment with the ring.
So, maybe aligning the vents at the far side of the fins so if the nipple is moved the air vents are still under the fins? I haven't tried that method, but I have checked the bottles after they've leaked to see whether the vents are still aligned and they have been. I try to be careful not to screw the lid on too tight, but I'll be sure to give your advice a shot. Thank you for this! We were so upset when we couldn't figure out why our bottles kept leaking periodically and would be a different bottle each time!
This is very interesting, we'll have to try it. Usually I just unscrew the ring, turn the bottle a quarter turn to the right or left, then reseat the ring and tighten and it stops leaking.
Thank you so much!! One more light night spillage, and I was going to throw them out the window. Dear Mr. Crunchy and mikel, I love you both. Thank you! I tried the alignment and it worked for me! I tried screwing the top on using the protective cap and it never turned independently of the ring.
Too tight a fit. Also I never had leaking on 1's but I have with the 2's we are using now. If we screw it on too tight, the alignment will definitely be affected. Sometimes it can be a challenge to align them even on normal lighting conditions. I used Avent with my first child no probs but this time major leaking. I can't believe that Avent aren't correcting this or at least detailing how to correctly put the teats in!!!
Thanks for saving me a fortune!!! Do you have an update to the sippee? We're still using the avent system, but with the sippee spout The liquid gets trapped within the rubber I squirts out the breather up top. Thanks for the detailed advice. I have tried your method but it still leaks randomly. I will add aligning one of the vents to the small nick on the external part of the ring and see how it goes.
But for right now I am so frustrated. If you don't mind, could you go over using the protective cap to help gauge whether the ring is screwed on too tight? I read your other posting about turning it 1.
Thanks again for your time and effort. AVENT - advise your consumers properly on something sooooo important!!!! I tired your method of aligning the air valves with the fins, but my bottles still leak like crazy. Is there anything else that I can try? I'm so mad I'm ready to just throw the bottles out of the window. Please Help! I tried your method last night too, still got some leakage. It is so weird, I used the Avent bottles with my son in and did not have issues.
This time around with my daughter, I bought the new BPA free ones, and they leak like crazy. I may switch bottles too, because even if I get the hang of it, it would be too complicated to give the grandparents or any other babysitter the Avent bottle tutorial. You should just be able to screw on the lid and feed!
Do not buy these bottles, period. Quality control is sub-par, above method is good idea, but not consistent. My baby is almost a month old and Im using Avent bottles. Aside from it leaks sometimes, it seems like my baby sounds like she is slurping when she is eating. Im beginning to think that the milk flow is too fast for her.
Any suggestion why she sounds like she havent been fed for dayswith the Avent bottle? Is it the nipple or is it just my baby? I think this is why she is a little bit gassy. Aslo she is having a hard time to burp. Hi laramitch, most probably your baby need some time to get use to the nipple. For others who still get the occasional leak following my method.
Unscrew and check the air valves again, you'll be surprised that it has moved from it's place because of over-tightening. Simply awesome! My wife and I bought Avent bottles because we trust bottles made in Europe and not those ones that might be made with inferior and dangerous materials from China.
Your posting did the trick! Thank you so much for your post. I am excited to try this new trick. I am so tired of listening to my husband's ranting just about every time he feeds the baby. I am so excited to have found your post before I began searching the internet I did visit Advent.
I have been so frustrated, that I end up using the Playtex bottles until I am not irritated with the Avent ones. I really hope your method works! Thank you so much for taking the time to help the rest of us parents out! You should be on Avent payroll for all the people you have saved from moving to the next product.
Avent bottles are junk. I'm thinking of burning them before my wife catches me. We can send a man to the moon but they can't make a bottle that doesn't leak. Avent should be ashamed of themselves.
Steve from Wisconsin. We used Avent bottles 5 years ago and never had any problem. But with the new bottles, it leaked every time and we were so frustrated. I had a a crying baby while I tried to adjust the ring, but it didn't matter how hard I tried, it still leaked.
I was thinking about changing the bottle but I love how easy it is to wash the Avent bottles so I googled and found this site. This made my day! Thank you, thank you, thank you! The leaking has been driving me crazy and I already threw bottles away thinking they were the problem. It gets to be expensive!
Your advice was so helpful. Well thank you so much Hopefully we will never have to worry about every bottle we have brought with leaking onto all of the diapers and clothes we have brought with in the diaper bag.
Then twist the ring only don't hold the nipple you twist the ring to the point it spins independent of the nipple but not past the point that the ding is now centered between two numbers on the nipple.
That's tight enough and won't leak! YAY for non leaking avent bottles I'm laughing so hard with the previous post of the woman plotting her husband's death! I used Avent for my first child, who's almost 5 yrs old now, and I recall having the freakin' leaking problem I've tried some other brands Dr. Browns, Medela and they sometimes leak too specially the Dr Browns wide neck ones.. So I decided to stick to Avent, since they are the easiest to wash and to use with powder formula.
My husband complains so much of the leaks each time he has to feed the baby Also, it seems to leak more when the baby is crying desperately! I will try your tips and get back at you if they work.
Thank you for taking the time to do this!!! I forgot to add that by aligning the vent under the number of the nipple with the triangle in the outside of the ring, you automatically align the other two vents with the inside fins of the ring. Let's see if it works out! This leaking issue has been driving me insane.
I just tried your solution and no leaking so far the first time. I am glad you posted this. My husband and I always thought it's time to change the nipple or buy a new bottle because of the mysterious leaks and it's so annoying re-tightening it up.
After googling our problem I found out that most parents' using Avent bootles had the same problems. Thanks for the tips! Just came across your blog. We've been using Avent bottles with the Isis pump for about a month. The very first time we used them, I tightened the ring semi-tight and found that it leaked. They've never leaked since then, apart from a couple of occasions when my wife tightened them as she sometimes doesn't have the strength to tighten them as I would.
We'll try your method next time and hopefully it'll work so there'll be no need to tighten the heck out of them in the future I'll never buy Avent anything again, with a new baby you have enough to deal with without having to put up with hassles like this. For the sake of other new parents please make your opinions on the bottles known on review sites etc. Maybe then Avent might make proper bottles. Can everyone say class-action?
Looks like Avent have fixed this issue with their new bottles in the blue box. I complained to Avent and they replaced all of my leaky bottles with the new non-leaky ones. The new ones have an additional ring piece that goes in after the nipple.
Yes, it's another piece to wash but they don't leak!! That's good news. Do you have a photo of it? Can you upload a photo and paste the link here for all to see? That's good news for all especially the company :D. Looks like they have come to terms that it's a design fault.
Some info of the new bottles are on their official website www. Now they call it a two-piece instead of one-piece anti-colic system. Well, the 'leaky' saga is over with the new bottles, glad to have helped everyone who had this problem. Hi Crunchy, just wanted to thank you for your advice above, it worked!
I did call Avent and they are sending me a few new styled bottles to try but in the meantime your technique, along with wetting the ring prior to screwing onto bottle, does the trick!! Thanks for this post. I kept complaining to my husband about these bottles and he did a search and found your post.
I tried it and so far so good. I also called Avent and they are sending me 4 new bottles with their new technology.
I didn't even have to ask for them. I stated that they are annoying and constantly leak and she said she would send me replacements I look forward to putting an end to my frustration. Thanks again for the post! Thank you so much for this site! Avent should thank you. A lot of people don't think you need to read instructions on putting a bottle together, so I'm sure it was mentioned in the box. But we tried this and it worked! I just knew it couldn't of been Avent especially with the price we paid for them!
Also, we have the BPA free ones and we did have to use your method. Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for so much for figuring this out and posting it. I picked up a couple of the blue packaged two piece bottles and they seem to work fine with no leaks. Just got off the phone with Philips and like j.
They're sending me four of those and if they work then all I need to do is call them back, send back my honey colored one piece bottles, and they'll replace them with the new design.
So it looks like all we need to do is call them up to have our bottle problems fixed. Hi all, I just wanted to share another method which works before I found this site.
Just turn the ring anti clockwise until you hear a click sound. Then turn it clockwise to lock it tight. I will give the method taught on this site a try as well. Thank you for this - I just covered my son in formula and he was none too impressed!! Will adjust all the teats in a minute ;. Hello, We were really frustated with the leakage. It really worked for us.
