Sami refused but after John was killed by a hit-and-run driver, Sami agreed to divorve Lucas and marry EJ for her family's safety. After Sami gave birth and more tests were done, EJ learned that he was only Johnny's father, and Lucas was Allie's father. Once the babies were born, EJ and Sami were married but he was shot at the end of the ceremony. As he was rushed to the hospital, EJ feared that he could be paralyzed.

With Stefano threatening her, Sami tried to convince EJ that she cared for him, despite his insistence that she go back to Lucas. Sami stayed by EJ's side as he recuperated and eventually he was able to walk again.

He pressured Sami to act more like his wife but Sami reminded him their marriage was fake. Lucas was later arrested for EJ's shooting and he was charged and imprisoned for attempted murder. Stefano was soon arrested for kidnapping and EJ, Sami, and her twins were sent to a safe house for protection.

EJ was pleased that he and Sami were able to bond over the twins. Once Stefano was found in a catatonic state in jail, EJ and Sami were released from protection. With the threat gone, Sami pressured EJ for an annulment, but EJ stalled and told Sami that his visa was going to expire and that he'd be deported.

Sami agreed to stay married to him and pretend that the marriage was real, for the sake of keeping her baby's father in the country. Sami and EJ lived in the DiMera mansion together and bonded over the twins. Despite Sami's efforts to keep EJ at a distance, they gave into their feelings and made love just as Lucas was released from prison and into house arrest at the DiMera mansion.

When Lucas caught them in bed together, he was furious at Sami and the tension between them and EJ grew. Meanwhile, EJ had started flirting with Nicole Walker, whom he was also defending in her divorce with Victor Kiriakis. He also helped Nicole when her ex-husband, Dean Trent Robbins, revealed that they were still married. Eventually EJ was caught between his attraction to Nicole and his love for Sami. Since Sami made it clear that she didn't share his feelings, EJ began looking to Nicole for comfort.

When they were stuck in an elevator together, EJ and Nicole gave into their feelings and made love, to be discovered by a furious Sami. Eventually, Nicole Walker, who said she was barren before they had made love, revealed that she was in fact pregnant with EJ's baby.

Wary, EJ had Nicole take a paternity test which proved that he was in fact the baby's father. EJ told a pleased Stefano that he'd have more DiMera heirs. EJ saved Sami's life when someone attempted to shoot her for witnessing the murder of Mayor Marino. Sami was taken away into a witness protection program, leaving EJ to care for Johnny. Meanwhile, with Nicole arrested for the murder of Trent Robbins, EJ worked hard to get her out on bail. EJ looked Johnny and continues to reassure Nicole that he wants a future with her and their baby, but Nicole lost their baby while he was away on business and faked the rest of the pregnancy with a pregnancy pad, blackmailed Dr.

Baker so he'd go along with it and she found a young mother, Mia McKormick, who gave birth and sold her Sydney for 10K, which EJ gave to her for a wedding gown. Nicole feigned giving birth and swapped babies when Sami gave birth to EJ's daughter, the same day. EJ wasn't aware of any of this, but can tell Nicole is hiding something.

He found out from Sami,when Grace died, that Grace was his but she's not and tried to punish Sami for keeping the truth from him by taking full custody of Johnny from her but Nicole put a stop to that. In the meantime, when Stefano was kidnapped by Victor, during all of this, he had Stephanie kidnapped by Owen, the gardener and spy who worked for the Kiriakis'.

Eventually, Stephanie was freed by Philip, and the families have since decided to stop feuding. EJ learned that Nicole miscarried their child and faked her pregnancy and then stole Sami's "adopted baby" Sydney, who she found out was really EJ's kid. She pawned the child off as her own. EJ learned the truth and in his rage to hurt Sami for lying about Sydney being his child, he kidnapped Sydney with Anna DiMera's help and 5 grand!

EJ became depressed and thought about suicide but that same night, Sami found him with the gun, drunken and passed out at the DiMera mansion and she shot EJ in the head. EJ spent a few days in the hospital and left without even a bandaid. Stefano and E. In retaliation for Tony's death, E. Masi shot Philip but did not kill him.

Frustrated that they had failed, E. But, Hope entered the room and saved Philip. When Philip recovered, Victor kidnapped Stefano in retaliation. Furious that his father was in danger, E.

Philip and E. But while the professional battles were settled, E. For months, everyone in Salem thought Sydney was missing. He had Anna create ransom notes and send them to Sami.

He even faked Sydney's death by placing her bloody clothes in the Salem River. Just when it looked like Rafe could not solve the crime, E. Sami was thrilled. Anna took her money and left town. And E. Stefano was devastated that E. But E. Rafe had continued to investigate the kidnapping, but kept hitting dead ends. Yet E. Stefano had Anna "escorted" to a top-secret location and tried to have Rafe killed when he happened on Anna's trail. Rafe returned to Salem with no new information, yet still a threat to E.

Meanwhile, E. And she was beginning to warm up to him, too. Sami continually heralded him as a hero for getting Sydney home safe. That was music to E. Sami, however, was torn between her love for Rafe, her budding feelings for E.

To try to provide a more stable life for her kids, Sami agreed to let E. Everyone was happy except Will, who moved out and began living with his grandma, Kate, at the DiMera mansion. Stefano was adamant that Sami not keep him from his grandchildren so Stefano blackmailed E. Luckily, since Will was living there, Sami's decision was a bit easier.

However, E. To prolong her stay at the DiMera mansion, E. To Sami, he looked like the hero again as he paid for the repairs. A short time later, E. She wasn't able to say the words back to him, as she still had lingering feelings for Rafe, but she was obviously drawn to him again. He continued to pursue her and was very open about his feelings for her. Nicole had found out that he was the mastermind behind Sydney's kidnapping and began to blackmail him.

Sami continued to have feelings for both E. However, once she found Rafe kissing Nicole in her hotel room, she ran home and agreed to marry E. Just as the ceremony was about to conclude, Rafe rushed in with the proof that E. Sami dumped E. He confessed to Stefano that E. Kate overheard this confession and called Sami to warn her. Sami panicked and went to the mansion to confront E.

But, she found him passed out holding a gun. Sami grabbed the gun and shot E. Then, she threw the gun in the river and ran back home to Rafe. At first he pretended that he didn't remember what happened so Sami would have to pretend to be married to him.

But, when his health improved, he was forced to concede that he remembered everything. He set out on a mission to find out who shot him, the main suspects being Sami and Will.

Arianna contacted E. Under suspicious investigation of ballot tampering, E. But, their celebration was short lived as Rafe barged in and announced that E. Horrified, Nicole moved out of the mansion and filed divorce papers. However, around the same time, Nicole learned that she was pregnant. She wanted to keep the news from E. Rafe stepped in and claimed to be the father. Nicole switched the E. Even after the test results, E. But, he had other problems to worry about as well.

Stefano had been pushing E. The letter said that E. But, Stefano asked E. The one person that E. He did so because she was dying from a brain tumor and wanted her to know the truth before she died. Lexie said that she didn't care about DNA. She would always see E. And, when it came out that Lexie's tumor may have been caused by inhaling fumes in the tunnel where Andre held her captive. Since Andre was Stefano's best soldier, E. One night, E. However, Stefano was shot.

He was assumed dead. At first, Will was arrested. When Will's alibi checked out, Rafe and Roman turned their suspicion towards E. And, they had some help in furthering their suspicions. Ian McAlister was the one who shot Stefano. But, he framed E. When Lucas discovered and turned in the letter that Stefano wasn't E. Will believed in E. As soon as Sami uncovered footage of someone stealing E.

As the "evidence" began piling up, Sami and Will convinced E. And, Sami helped E. During their escape, a giant explosion hit Salem. Sami and E. Sami fell over the edge, but E. Thankful to him for saving her life, Sami went on the run with E.

They hid out in one of Stefano's safe houses. Shortly after they got there, E. But, before they had much time together, E. He left Sami to investigate it.

But, it was a trap. Ian found a double for Stefano and that's who was shot and killed at the mansion. Ian believed that he was entitled to part of the DiMera fortune, so he kidnapped Stefano and tortured him to get information from him. But, when Stefano refused to spill any secrets, Ian planned to torture E. Ian revealed that he had planted the letter from "Alice" and that Stefano and E.

While Ian was looking away, E. When Ian was knocked out, E. But, E. He set back to return to Sami. When he got back to the safe house, he found Rafe there with Sami. Rafe arrested them both and took them into the station.

But, the charges were soon dropped. However, the Governor put pressure on E. So, E. He and Sami were growing closer.

She agreed to go out on a date with him. But she still had feelings for Rafe. When Rafe's sister, Gabi was rushed to the hospital, Sami was there to help her though the tough news -- Gabi was pregnant.

Sami told Rafe the news and helped him accept it and work through it. Sami even offered to help plan the wedding for Gabi and Nick, whom everyone assumed was the baby's father.

As Sami and Rafe drew closer, she decided to break things off with E. She was planning on telling him after Gabi's wedding. But on the day of their wedding, Chad exposed Gabi's secret -- that Nick was not the father of Gabi's baby. Will, reluctantly, admitted that he was the father. Sami was furious with Gabi and lashed out at her for keeping Will out of the baby's life.

Rafe immediately lashed out at Will and told Sami that this was all her son's fault. Sami and Rafe broke up on the spot. Sami was happy to see him. Sami told E. But, she said that she'd seen the real Rafe and didn't want anything to do with him. She acknowledged that she and E.

He and Sami began dating. But as Sami began planning a future with E. So Nick hatched a plan. He had overheard Lucas scream at Will, "I went to jail for you! Nick also planted a transmitting and recording device on Will, then sent a text to Lucas prompting the two to have a conversation where Nick found out that Will was the one who shot E.

Nick had papers drawn up for Will to sign that would release all parental rights to Gabi's baby and just waited for the right time. That time came when Gabi started having labor pains while talking to Sami.

Gabi and the baby were fine, and despite Kayla saying that dehydration contributed to her labor pains, Nick used Sami's temper as an excuse to set his plan into motion. Nick confronted Will with the deal -- if Will signs away his paternal rights, Nick will stay quiet about Will shooting E. Nick also pointed out that turning in Will would mean incriminating Lucas, Roman, Hope, and more in the cover-up.

Sonny, E. Sami even offered to sign a document that would forbid her from coming near the baby. But Nick would not agree. Despite protests from Sami, Lucas, E. But Sami would not accept her son not being a part of his daughter's life. She and E. So, Sami wanted to ask Stefano for help. Rafe returned the favor by revealing that Nicole had swapped the babies and EJ and Sami were reunited with Sydney.

Sami and EJ grew closer when Syndey was kidnapped, but it turned out that EJ had teamed up with Anna DiMera to fake the abduction so he could be the big hero when he brought the girl home safe. So as Sami and EJ prepared to remarry, Rafe interrupted the ceremony with proof of his crimes. Fearing that EJ might kidnap her children, Sami went to confront him, but finding him passed out drunk and holding a gun she just shot him in the head!

After EJ recovered, he was determined to find out who had tried to kill him. Arianna Hernandez had proof, but died in a hit-and-run before she could give it to him. Nicole found it and she and EJ got married so they could take custody of the kids away from Sami. Nicole found them together and took her revenge by helping expose that EJ and the DiMeras were behind replacing Rafe with an evil look-alike. EJ decided to change his ways again, giving Sami back custody of the twins and running for Mayor of Salem with Nicole managing his campaign.

But he used underhanded methods to try and win, framing John for corporate embezzlement. When Sami and EJ feared Johnny had died, they grieved by falling into bed together, but thankfully the boy was fine. Nicole wound up pregnant, and had to claim that Rafe was the father, something EJ did not believe. When Stefano was shot, EJ was the prime suspect, but was actually innocent.
